Elk River Flag Football Severe Weather Guidelines
The safety of all participants is our primary concern. Please adhere to the following emergency procedures in the event of inclement weather:
General Storm Suspension
If a severe storm approaches the playing area, play may be suspended to allow for safe travel to shelter. Once a game is suspended, ALL participants must clear the field immediately and relocate to their vehicles or a permanent building.
Lightning and Thunder (30-Minute Rule)Strict adherence to the following is required if lightning is seen or thunder is heard:

- Immediate Suspension: The game must stop instantly, and all attendees must seek shelter.
- The Wait Period: Play cannot resume until 30 minutes have passed since the last visible flash of lightning or sound of thunder.
- Restarting the Clock: Any subsequent lightning or thunder during the wait period will restart the 30-minute clock from zero.
National Weather Service (NWS) Warnings
In the event of an official NWS warning (such as a Tornado Warning):
- Games are suspended immediately without exception.
- All participants, officials, and spectators must seek the nearest sturdy, permanent shelter.
Open-sided structures like dugouts, tents, or picnic pavilions are not considered safe lightning shelters. Please prioritize fully enclosed buildings or hard-topped vehicles.
